Humberto Leal was executed by Texas yesterday, defying an order from the International Court of Justice. The United States Government intervened, but unsuccessfully, to stop the execution. Here is the brief. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a statement condemning the breach of international law by the United States. A last minute application to the Supreme Court was dismissed 5-4, paving the way for the execution. The same day as the judgment was issued, one of the members of the majority, Justice Kennedy, was visiting Galway where he lectured to the students in the summer school of the New England School of Law that we host. He had lunch that day with one of my colleagues. I'm ashamed.
Thanks to Megan Fairlie.
