Yesterday, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution on the subject of rape as a weapon of war. It considerers the destabilising effect sexual violence can have on armed conflict situations and its potential consequences for the restoration of international peace and security. The Council says that ‘effective steps to prevent and respond to acts of sexual violence can significantly contribute to the maintenance of international peace and security’: http://daccessdds.un.org/doc/UNDOC/GEN/N08/391/44/PDF/N0839144.pdf?OpenElement. Ireland issued a statement for the debate: http://www.mediafire.com/?mydfzyittte. For a BBC story with some NGO reactions, see: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7464462.stm.
